Week 4: Reactive Arthritis?

I’ve been suffering from a hurt and swollen ankle the last week and a half, and just got it looked at. Turns out it’s inflammatory arthritis! My GP said this can come with Crohn’s, but in 20 years, I’ve never had arthritis ever, even with horrible flare ups. I think an injury started it, then heavy use 10 days ago exacerbated it, but now the other ankle is swollen too, so I can’t blame it on injury. Oedema is ugly. I poke the flesh and it is swollen and puffy. It really hurts.

Also, two other old injuries are acting up (tendonitis of the shoulder hurts, and an old dislocated rib hurts so bad I can’t lie on it.) Two days ago, from my wrists to elbows hurt, as if I had lifted weights. So I think it’s all inflammatory, and I have to attribute it to the hookworm, since this hasn’t happened before. It’s not unusual for my shoulder to act up when my intestines are inflamed. The weird thing, is the pain in my intestines is so much improved, that I feel as if their inflammation has gone down. Why would the intestines improve
only for inflammation to move into the ankle joints?

I hope this is only temporary, since it’s very painful to walk. I was complaining of feeling like an old Grandma; when my doctor suggested Ben Gay and Tylenol, I started laughing. My Grandma had an old ankle injury that never healed, always sat perched in the kitchen on a stool (like I am now) and none of us wanted to sleep with her at night because she reeked of Ben Gay. I just finished my 4th week, so I am in the time of allergic reaction, which is inflammatory, but this really sucks.

Yesterday my bowels turned again, with multiple small liquid diarrheas, night sweats last night, and I got up at least 5 times. Still, the last few were solid. It may have been too much tomato sauce, which can do this to me, and my period is in 2 days. I wonder if that’s making my joints worse as well.

My reaction to 10 larvae is getting a little ridiculous.

The journey continues, on crutches.
